The 'Tarot' Thing...from Another World

A lot of the content centres around John Carpenter and his work in cinema...I have to say that I am quite a Carpenter fanboy and have been for most of my existence.  I am particuarly keen on his films Halloween & The Thing...I'm not saying I know them inside out, but I'm no slouch either!  I find his soundtrack work to be the most pleasing aspect and do consider him to be a giant in respect of the film soundtrack.

Featuring....The Thing, Hallowe'en series, John Carpenter, The Wicker Man, Blade Runner, Alien, They Live, Children of the Corn, Ten Little Indians, Carrie, Christine, The Shining, Dark Star, Matrix series, Backdraft, Kurt Russell, Mike Myers, Norse Mythology, Egyptian Mythology, The Sandman, Total Recall, Beatles/McCartney, James Bond, Ridley Scott, Rob Bottin, David Lynch, Joseph Conrad, Agatha Christie, George Lucas, Star Wars Series, THX 1138, Coppola, Stephen King, Kubrick, Christian Bale, Steven Spielberg, Jim Carrey, Samuel L Jackson, Daft Punk etc etc

Still a work in progress...but I've put it up now, for your perusal.

Synopsis
An American scientific expedition to the frozen wastes of the Antarctic is interrupted by a group of seemingly mad Norwegians pursuing and shooting a dog. The helicopter pursuing the dog explodes, eventually leaving no explanation for the chase. During the night, the dog mutates and attacks other dogs in the cage and members of the team that investigate. The team soon realizes that an alien life-form with the ability to take over other bodies is on the loose and they don't know who may already have been taken over.

Carpenter's opening shot of the helicopter (the small speck above) coming in from the distance is likely in homage to the 1974 film Ten Little Indians/And Then There Were None (which Carpenter mentions in relation to this film already!) where we see a helicopter come in from the distance...effectively they're the same opening shot!  Plot aspects and narrative will also overlap between these two films too!

 In both films the helicopter will land in a very isolated spot...cut-off from the outside world.
This approach shot lasts much longer than The Thing, but the initial approach is effectively the same.

This major motion picture featured just twelve credited actors in the cast.
EXACTLY like our 12 protagonists in The Thing! (save the Norwegians)

 A group is invited, under false pretenses, to an isolated hotel in the Iranian desert. After dinner, a cassette tape accuses them all of crimes that they have gotten away with. One by one they begin to die, in accordance to the Ten Little Indians nursery rhyme. After a search is made of the hotel, they realize that the murderer is one of them. A few members of the group attempt to trust each other, but the question still remains, who can one trust? (straight out of The Thing narrative)

MacReady: [swallows, sighs] I know what you mean, Blair. Trust is a tough thing to come by these days. Tell you what - why don't you just trust in the Lord?

I had to outline/expand the opening card...The Fool & Dog (Fool's Journey) and explain in some detail the workings, but it all fits tbh...even without trying too hard!  Yes...the intention looks to have been to 'veil' this encode, but it is quite straight forward to decipher.  I know Carpenter uses 'ciphers' in his films...one particular one is Charles Cyphers/Ciphers....aka Halloween's police sherrif Leigh Brackett. ;-)

Odin himself was the Scandinavian Hermes/Thoth.

Loki's relation with the gods varies by source. Loki sometimes assists the gods and sometimes causes problems for them. Loki is a shape shifter and in separate incidents he appears in the form of a salmon, mare, seal, a fly, and possibly an elderly woman. Loki's positive relations with the gods end with his role in engineering the death of the god Baldr. Loki is eventually bound by the gods with the entrails of one of his sons. (Salmon...'the glacier' film location site in The Thing, is the actual Salmon Glacier in BC!)

If we connect to Sirius...we naturally connect to Orion, the shepherd of the Sirius dog.

I think that takes care of the opening...the Orion/Loki Fool & his Sirius/Loki Torch Dog!

 Corroborating evidence of links between Loki/Loki's Torch and Sirius can be seen in films The Mask & Son of the Mask...the former with Jim 'fool & his dog/sirius spotlight' Carrey!

Appropriately named Damon/Daemon (aka Private Ryan/O'Ryan/Orion) will play 'fallen angel' Loki in Dogma...Loki and Dog-ma. Loki falling from the sky, The Thing's helicopter (chasing a dog) is a form of Loki falling from the sky.

Bartleby stabs Loki in the side killing him.  (Odin's pierced side/Christ's pierced side etc.)

People who have seen Carpenter's The Thing...might already be anticipating the next part, the transformation of 'the dogs' an early and vivid aspect...not easily forgotten and definitely not for the squeamish!

The Magician (aka a Wizard)

What's been done here (with the magician & subsequent high priestess/empress cards) is really quite clever...the 'Chess Wizard' (an Apple II computer) would likely denote the male form...Wizard/Warlock (male) Witch/Sorceress (female).
The two male/female aspects have been combined...here is how:

The computer actually has a 'female voice'...MacReady will refer to the machine as a 'cheating bitch' (female) when he is check-mated. The voice is Carpenter's then wife Adrienne Barbeau

J & B (aka Jachin/Boaz, the pillars)

 On the table in front of the Magician the symbols of the four Tarot suits signify the Classical elements of earth (the setting & grain), air (atmosphere/chopper pilot), fire (see below) and water (ice).

Card imagery clearly evokes Isis...horned moon crown (hathor/isis) her veil behind etc.

 Other variants on the card associated the woman (High Priestess) with the Virgin Mary, Isis, the metaphoricalBride of Christ or Holy Mother Church.



Whisky is made from grain...so the above could also (in a way) satisfy The Empress card, grain at her feet etc....the next sequential card, which evokes 'Ceres' (goddess of the grain, ceres/cere-al). 

The Empress sits on a throne wearing a starry crown, holding a scepter in one hand. The Scepter is representative of her power over life, her crown has twelve stars representing her dominance over the year, and her throne is in the midst of a field of grain

The Empress is associated with Isis, both as the mistress of heaven and as the Ur-Poisoner. According to some tales, Isis achieved the queenship of heaven by poisoning Ra with a serpent and refusing to heal him until he told her his secret name (lost word etc). Isis’s consort was Osiris, an example of The Hanged Man.

Völuspá (Old Norse Vǫluspá, Prophecy of the Völva (Seeress); Modern Icelandic, reconstructed Old Norse is the first and best known poem of the Poetic Edda. It tells the story of the creation of the world and its coming end (an apocalypse, The Thing is an apocalyptic film, even Carpenter says so!) related by a völva addressing Odin. It is one of the most important primary sources for the study of Norse mythology.

The Emperor

The Emperor is Key Four of the Major Arcana. Fours are stable numbers; four walls, four seasons, four corners. It takes a massive amount of energy, comparatively, to move them. The strength of The Emperor is the stability he brings.  He is also strongly associated with Life; his scepter is an ankh, (you'll see Mac's pyramid later!) the symbol of life. But he is in the mountains (the setting for The Thing), separated from the pulse of life (snowbound).

Fire, the sun & Heat Wave
The sign of the Emperor is associated with the sun sign of Aries (Aries being a fire sign). Aries is the first sign of the zodiac and is the leader. The Emperor, like Aries, is fiery, powerful, authoritative and very egotistical.

Imo...Mac is clearly 'the leader'...one of the most obvious 'screen leaders' in modern cinema.

 Many deities have been associated with the sun. The Greeks believed that Apollo, Bacchus, Dionysos, Sabazius, Hercules, Jason, Ulysses, Zeus, Uranus, and Vulcan partook of either the visible or invisible attributes of the sun. The Norwegians regarded Balder the Beautiful as a solar deity, and Odin is often connected with the celestial orb, especially because of his one eye.

 Even the film location in British Columbia (colum/dove) references the sun via its flag


The Hierophant
The card stands for religion and orthodox theology. It also represents traditional education or a “Man of high social standing” (see text, Garry was the outpost commander aka El Capitan, but was diposed.)
The hierophant is also strongly associated with the Deceiver and with Power over others.

In most iconographic depictions, the Hierophant is seen seated on a throne between two pillars symbolizing Law and Liberty or obedience and disobedience, according to different interpretations.

Garry's Key(s)...
He wears a triple crown, and the keys to Heaven are at his feet.
This character is heavily associated with 'keys', as can be gleaned from watching the film!

The Lovers is associated with the star signGemini, and indeed is also known as The Twins in some decks.

The Hanged Man is associated with Odin, the primary god in Norse mythology. Odin hung upside down from the world-tree (all evoking the TOL), Yggdrasil, for nine days to attain wisdom and thereby retrieved the runes from the Well of Wyrd, (Clark: "I don't know what the hell's in there, but it's weird/wyrd and pissed off, whatever it is.") which in Norse cosmology is regarded as the source and end of all sacred mystery and knowledge. The moment he glimpsed the runes, he died, but the knowledge of them was so powerful that he immediately returned to life.

  Levi likens the hanged man to Prometheus, the Eternal Sufferer, further declaring that the upturned feet signify the spiritualization of the lower nature. In the pseudo-Egyptian Tarot the hanged man is suspended between two palm trees and signifies the Sun God who dies perennially for his world.

After his death, the historical Odin was apotheosized, his identity being merged into that of the mythological Odin, god of wisdom, whose cult he had promulgated. Odinism then supplanted the worship of Thor, the thunderer, the supreme deity of the ancient Scandinavian pantheon. The mound where, according to legend, King Odin was buried is still to be seen near the site of his great temple at Upsala.
The twelve Drottars who presided over the Odinic Mysteries evidently personified the twelve holy and ineffable names of Odin. The rituals of the Odinic Mysteries were very similar to those of the Greeks, Persians, and Brahmins, after which they were patterned.  The Jesus & Osiris archetype is connected to 'the hanged man'...it is interesting that Odin is also 'a one eyed' god...perhaps an aspect is sacrificing 'one eye of perception' (lower self) for another 'enhanced eye of perception' (higher self). Odin should also be noted for 'the winged/horned head' motif too...ala the brain, we've noted the internal 'brain eye' heavily in recent work!

A one-eyed snake is also a euphemism for the penis.  The snake aspect connects to the pharoah's head-piece (internal brain reptilian complex etc) and the serpent uraeus.

 The Eye was of ancient times the symbol of life, understanding and vitality, related especially to sacred matters, such as the Eye of Odin which saw the entire world from Asgard, and similarly of Horus.

 In the last post...we spotted Hopkins 'hanging a man' and himself as 'the hanged man' (Osiris slain/Jesus crucified) in Scott's Hannibal and as the risen 'Osiris/Jesus' archetype in Demme's Silence of the Lambs...via Memphis seat of the Osiris-Apis King.

So there you have it...Hopkins as 'the hanged man' in countless examples and ones that stretch beyond stand alone media.

Odin also owned Sleipnir, an eight-legged horse, who was given to Odin by Loki, and the severed head of Mímir, which foretold the future. (Eight legs, like a spider and a headless corpse!)

The character is called Norris.
 Norris derives from the Norman-French pre 10th century word "norreis", meaning a northerner, or more pragmatically a Norseman or what we now know as a Viking. (yes even more Norse/Norris resonance!) 
Norris is also the team member who supposedly able to speak/translate Norwegian.

Strength
 Because it is usually the eighth card, it is associated with Arachne. Arachne challenged Athena to a weaving contest and was victorious.

The Thing...note the hands around the jaw/chest-mouth in both the scene and in the card imagery!
Arguably...the maiden hands are seemingly forcing open the lion's mouth.
Strength is also a massive 'solar resonator'...there are big 'fire' elements in this scene and throughout the film.

 Then, Athena transformed Arachne (Greek meaning spider & origin of arachnid) into the eight-armed spider, to punish her for the victory.

Mimir (headless corpse), whose name means “The Rememberer,” is the divine animating force within cultural/ethnic memory. His wisdom is the wisdom of the traditions that the heathen Germanic peoples held to be sacred. Some of this evokes Lynch's Eraserhead & Cronos/Saturn (Rhea) swallowing children etc.

Lynch follwed Eraserhead with The Elephant Man (the creature that never forgets or one that remembers!).

It starred Anthony 'Hannibal' Hopkins...Hannibal evoking the elephant riding leader of the same name.

John 'Alien Kane/Peseshkaf mouth' Hurt playing Merryck.

Elephant Man Hurt played 'the hanged man' (see below) in 10 Rillington Place...as Timothy 'hanged man' Evans. Likewise the same with Attenborough...as John 'hanged man' Christie.

This scene was the first British people had seen in a cinema of a British hanging, and as it was still covered under the government's Official Secrets Act, no details regarding the scene were available.

Attenborough previously seen above as John Christie (& hanging)...and Attenborough in Agatha Christie's Ten Little Indians (and hanging!) Christie? More like Christ-ie, with all these 'hanged man martyr' aspects!  Richard Attenborough as Arthur Cannon, judge. Accused by Mr. Owen (Mr U N Owen aka Mr UN-Known) of having sentenced an innocent man to death by hanging (kind of the same premise we find in Rillington Place, via Christie influencing the trial of Evans). The above image seems to be a composite of The Hanged Man and The Death Card (skull) evoking the ace of spades.

Attenborough/Cannon IS Mr Owen...the whole deal is his doing and he has set up the course of events (even faking his own death to avoid suspicion), his final 'hanging of the last victim' is foiled and he dies (after poisoning himself) with his scheme in tatters.  The final scenes of the film focus heavily on hanging and the noose and all originating from Attenborough/Cannon...effectively he is now shown again as the hanged man.  We even get the 'fool' term mentioned twice ("we're at the end, you fool", is one example) near the film's close...the alternative title 'And Then There Were None' taking us to 0/Zero...the beginning and the end. We might connect the 'judge' to 'judgement' if we're inclined...and producer Harry Towers (who has done 3 adaptations for the screen '65, '74 & '89) as the Tower(s).

It is Christie's best-selling novel with 100 million sales to date, making it the world's best-selling mystery ever, and one of the best-selling books of all time. (Publications International lists it as 7th best-selling.) The novel has been made into several films and adapted for radio.  The endings vary...the book ends with the final female having hanged herself, the play with two characters being innocent and surviving.

There was a 1989 version made which again featured Herbert Lom (who also plays in the 1974 film).

Donald Pleasence was originally cast as Blair (The Things' hanged man) in John Carpenter's remake of THE THING (1982), but there was a scheduling conflict and Wilford Brimley ended up in the role.

These overlaps are just mental!!!

Hercules & Arachne
Hercules, the son of Zeus, is an archetype of strength. He is a Solar Hero, as shown by his archetypal 12 labors – each one standing for one sign of the Zodiac.

The Pattern of 12

A modern example of this pattern is the Order of the Garter, which has 12 members and the monarch as its head.

Similarly a legal jury has 12 members and is subject to the judge.

Traditionally, a witches' coven has 12 members plus a leader.

The legend of King Arthur and the 12 Knights of the Round Table is, according to a poem by Robert de Borron written about 1200 AD, deliberately modelled on the Last Supper, but be that as it may, the image is sufficiently strong to have survived for 800 years.

The Greeks and Romans had many gods, but 12 were separated from the rest as the Major Gods. The Greek list with the Roman equivalents in brackets is:

The Valkiries in Scandinavian mythology were 12 nymphs of Valhalla who, with drawn swords, would ride into battle alongside the warriors and pick out those of the enemy destined for death.

In ancient times there were 12 princes of the Aztec god king Queltzalcoatl.

Osiris, the Egyptian King had 12 apostles, as did Jesus with his 12 disciples.

In homoeopathic medicine there are 12 basic mineral salts, each equated to the influence of the 12 signs of the Zodiac.

There is some kind of overly produced and cgi ridden version of Hercules, currently doing the rounds starring The Rock.

The box is from a real firm that actually produces dynamite...explosive strength. We see dynamite used during the film and we also get the inventor of the said dynamite via a reference to Nobel, from Bennings.

 

As the pagan new year approaches, and commercially we see all things ghastly, ghostly and beastly in the shops, I thought I'd spin you a little tale of the eight-legged creature that often adorns Hallowe'en (another Carpenter vehicle) gifts - the spider! The spider has played an important role in the folklore of Europe and indeed throughout the whole world, where in some parts she is still worshipped, having many links to sacrifice, blood, harvest, herfest (autumnal equinox) etc. http://www.whitedragon.org.uk/articles/arachne.htm

In most species, female spiders will spin a thick, protective cocoon for their developing eggs and sometimes the spiderlings once they've hatched. Some species will leave the cocoon unattended while the young spiders develop, and others, such as wolf spiders, will carry the cocoons around with them.

 Cocoon is a 1985 comedy-drama-science fiction film directed by Ron Howard about a group of elderly people rejuvenated by aliens.  About 10,000 years ago, peaceful aliens from the planet Antarea set up an outpost on the planet Earth, on an island later known to mankind as Atlantis.

McMurdo Station is mentioned in detail in the novel Decipher dealing with an ancient code left by the Atlantians to save the world.  In Stargate SG-1, McMurdo is mentioned as a staging area for Earth's squadrons of F-302 fighters. Also in the same series, 50 miles (80 km) from the station is the location of Earth's second Stargate, left over from an ancient site that was once the location of Atlantis.

Testing your fortune via the wire in the blood. Wheel...rota/taro, the circular test dish as the wheel, the herculean lion/leo bottom right. Mac as the wheel attendent. This side up (rota-tional advice). The card shows winged airborne entities...the other helicopter pilot (Palmer) will fly upwards to the ceiling.
Windows' fortune (his dish above)...will also take a turn for the worse, after Palmer transforms.

A six or eight-spoked wheel, often attended or crested by an individual (sometimes human; sometimes a Sphinx-like half-human, Egypt infused MacReady in this case) attired in an Egyptian-style headdress.
  The Wheel of Fortune is closely connected to The Magician and The Sun. 

Cards which are relevent to MacReady (shown above)...he carries out the 'wire in the blood' test and heat/fire (sun) is a large part of this scene.

Don't forget that Childs is the (egyptian) 'underworld King' via Platoon...where he meets with Rhah/Ra etc.

The Thing's US team and Norwegian Team are located in and around Queen Maud Land...the Norwegian base being about an hour away by chopper.  You might notice Mac Robertson too, bottom right.  The crashed saucer being very near to the Norwegian base, they probably knew it was there...hence their proximity!

 This landing site of The Thing's saucer (not far from the US camp) could have produced magnetic anomalies in the local area (or The Thing could be putting them out)...it is a possibility, at least and this could well be the reason that the US team are unable to contact anyone via radio...magnetic interference.  The Thing cannot afford for the outside world to know of its existence.

Odin can also be associated with the axe (Odin's Axe).
  Blair does eventually go 'berserk' (another norse link) and smashes up the helicopter and other equipment.

IMO...Blair has already been taken over by The Thing, we might tend to view his actions here from an alturistic POV (stopping the men from reaching the world etc) but this is likely not the case.  Just before this tech equipment axing, he is seen stealing parts from the helicopter...we then next see him going beserk in this scene above.  Blair (while locked in the cabin) has already dug a tunnel underneath to build The Thing's next saucer ship!

He likely raided the helicopter for parts and now he is smashing up tech equipment in the base...he is likely doing this to make access to these 'tech parts' easier...and all for The Thing's saucer!

He feeds Mac a bluff about the dog handler Clark...to put Mac off his scent!  In that light it also makes it more likely that it was Blair that got to the blood.  The keys to the fridge (Garry's keys) are dropped by Windows (when he finds Bennings being absorbed) not long before the discovery of the ruined blood.  Someone must've picked up the keys and then used them to open the fridge.  This is why Windows panics when the key issue crops up...he then knew he had them and that he subsequently dropped them!

Only Blair & Clark are absent...we know that Clark doesn't get infected, so it must be Blair who ruins the blood.  The damaged blood is found very soon after this scene!

We see the (odinic) axe on multiple occassions...double-head crossed axes on the back of Palmer, the axe in the door appropriately at the Norwegian Camp, Childs uses one to smash through a door and Blair also uses it on the dogs.

 Odin also commands a pair of wolves named Geri and Freki, to whom he gives his food in Valhalla since he consumes nothing but mead or wine.

The Norwegian dog in the film was named Jed. He was a half wolf/half husky breed. Jed was an excellent animal actor, never looking at the camera, the dolly or the crew members. Jed, however, is NOT the dog seen in the beginning chase scene, where the Norwegian is trying shoot him. Per Carpenter's commentary, this was another dog painted to look like Jed. (so literally a pair of half bred wolves...one actual & one cinematic rendering). This dog (Jed) also featured in the films White Fang and The Journey of Natty Gann.

The original script for The Thing had the tune 'Werewolves of London' (Zavon) earmarked for Jed roaming the base...Wonder's Superstitious was eventually used, although the Four Tops used in some video releases.

Now watch the 'crawfish-like' mass (@ 1m 45s) move towards the ceiling (after its hands grip the roof), it is almost out of view, but is very suggestive (imo) of the crawfish and its body!  The crab or crawfish signifies the retrograde motion of the moon.

 Court de Gébelin also relates the towers (moon card) to the Pillars of Hercules (Hercules, a recurring motif), beyond which, according to the Egyptians, the luminaries never passed. He notes also that the Egyptians represented the tropics as dogs who as faithful doorkeepers prevented the sun and moon from penetrating too near the poles. (this being set at the South Pole).

The Hermit

A potentially dangerous aspect of The Hermit is his retreat, his isolation. (Blair is forcibly sequestered/hermetically sealed from the others and isolated) We all need to retreat sometimes; retreat and renewal are necessary for growth. But The Hermit may be tempted to completely withdraw from the world, not because the journey is done, but because the dragons of the real are too daunting (Blair knows the capability of The Thing, more than anyone), or because the trivial pleasures of the cave are too intoxicating. Withdraw at the wrong time, stay withdrawn too long, and growth stops.

The film's theme was also performed by the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Simon Rattle, during the Opening Ceremony of the games. The film's theme tune was also played during each medal ceremony of the 2012 Olympics.  (The gold medal itself symbolically representing 'the sun', and silver 'the moon'....just as it is with money!)

The Thing (theatrical release) opened the same day as Ridley Scott's science fiction film Blade Runner, which debuted at #2, June 25th 1982.  The Thing actually premiered on June 11th, 1982 at the Alfred Hitchcock Theatre in L.A. for a special cast and crew screening. (Ironically the same night E.T. opened.)
Carpenter's work is loaded with Hitchcockian references and nods...too many to mention.

Clearly the film pays homage to 2001, a female HAL, a faulty talking bomb connected to faulty communications (ala AE35 comms unit), a spacewalk evoking Bowman/Poole, the airlock aspects, the sandwiches (ala 2001) the faulty bomb bay and bomb linking to the closing bomb aspects of Dr Strangelove etc.

I also noticed that Ron 'Blade Runner' Cobb was on the production too.  Ronald 'Total Recall' Shusett wrote the original Alien story with O'Bannon...Giler/Hill wrote the screenplay.


 The very first aspects of Dark Star are radio communications (see above) from McMurdo in Antarctica...being broadcast to the ship Dark Star...the same location that Windows tries to communicate with in The Thing.

McMurdo Station is frequently mentioned in the science fiction and horror films (such as John Carpenter's The Thing from 1982 and its 2011 prequel, The Thing). McMurdo Station is referred to in the science fiction movies Dark Star and Alien as being the site of a major space-traffic control center.

The theme song played during the opening and closing credits is "Benson, Arizona".

Which brings me to 'Phoenix'...a clear thematic aspect present within the film and crucial at the climax too.  The film is named Dark Star and if we were inclined, we might (on the basis of the phoenix) link to Sirius (in one aspect known as the star of portent/misfortune aka dark elements).  I've demonstrated here a few times the potential relationship between sirius/phoenix, relating to the 'sothic cycle' (canicular period) of the said star and it being analogous to the lifespan of the mythical phoenix...1461 years!

In what is one of the most bizarre pieces of trivia ever, Ian Fleming’s contribution to the letters of humanity includes the canon of 007 AND the children’s story Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Dahl also wrote the screenplay version of this one, but things get a little creepy when you consider James Bond was sometimes referred to as “Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.” Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (song) was meant for use in Thunderball, but was dropped.

The solex agitator is a small component made by a British scientist named Gibson. Gibson created this to build a solar energy device to harness solar (SUN) energy as a solution to the 1973 energy crisis. It only appeared in the film The Man with the Golden Gun.  Lee also lives on his own private island, as is the case in The Wicker Man.

The Nostromo (italian, boatswain/shipmate) and perhaps another nod to Joseph Conrad (author, Nostromo). Significant to the plot, Conrad's Nostromo concerns a small ship loaded with mined silver (ore) and manned by Nostromo.  The escape ship in Alien is called Narcissus (from Conrad's Nigger of Narcissus). Cameron's Aliens would reference Sulaco (also from Conrad's Nostromo) via the marines transport ship. Scott's debut The Duellists was based on Conrad's short story The Duel.


Giger 'mouth opening' was also referenced in Poltergeist II...the Kane tequila worm in/out of Freeling's mouth...likewise the facehugger probe entering Kane's mouth (Alien).  Yes, the name 'Kane' (canis) was used for both 'mouth opening' elements, in 2 separate and seemingly unrelated films and both from Giger!

Ridley with Cruise...Scott would only ever direct (with Howard Guard) one pop video, Avalon - Roxy Music. The pop video was filmed at the same Rothschild mansion (Mentmore Towers) that Cruise visits in Eyes Wide Shut!  The estate was called Somer-ton...in EWS, Hu/Hy/Hi Gadern etc. This same mansion was used in Batman Begins as Wayne Manor.

The worlds of Scott & Carpenter would be straddled by Rob 'The Thing' Bottin...he worked on Scott's fantasy film Legend, which featured Tim Curry as the horned demonic Darkness.  Scott did try and get Bottin to work on Blade Runner, but he was contracted to Carpenter's The Thing.  Scott told him about Legend, and towards the end of production on The Thing, Bottin read a script for the film and saw an excellent opportunity to create characters in starring roles.  According to Bottin, at the time, Legend had the largest makeup crew ever dedicated to one project.

 We've recently noted some 'opening of the mouth' aspects via Fear & Loathing (white rabbit/lepus scene) and Fight Club (gun metal in the mouth) and the (ground) zero Fool (Norton) opening/closing.

Bottin would begin his career via Star Wars as an apprentice...he worked on the Cantina bar scene and features as the tallest player in the band.

Several Tarot cards, including the Hanged Man, appear in Stephen King's Dark Tower (card 16, The Tower) series, most notably in The Gunslinger. The Hanged Man symbolizes Roland Deschain, the main character, as well as his quest.

  Stephen King's IT would feature The Thing's dog handler Clark (Richard Masur) and be directed by Carpenter associate Tommy Lee Wallace, who directed Hallowe'en 3 and who edited/production designed Hallowe'en (1978).  IT would also be set in British Columbia, as was Carpenter's The Thing.

The opening scene of IT is clearly a homage to Carpenter's Hallowe'en.  It takes place in a backyard with washing on a line (ala Halloween's Mr Riddle's yard/washing & the shape, as seen by Laurie/Curtis) and the young girl is called Laurie-Ann. A similar scene was shown in Halloween 2 with Laurie and her adoptive mother, hanging out washing.

Bottin would also work on Total Recall (based on P K Dick's short story) which featured the 'aliens' and the 'pyramid mines'!  Scott's Blade Runner being based on Dick's 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep'...his film referencing the Tyrell pyramid!

Dr Copper is also closely related to the blood incidents during The Thing...he suggests a blood serum test and he is the one who excliams that "somebody got to the blood". (It's likely that it was Blair)  This is suggestive of a link to 'copper' and 'blood'...which might subliminally connect to the royal bloodlines (blue bloods) and the idea that their blood is heavy with the element copper!  The wire used for the test may even be a copper one...for all that I know.

As you can see...the synchro connections don't end there.  Jamie Lee Curtis would also play Stratten (see above) that's her 'white rabbit' sorted too...her film debut, would famously be in Carpenter's 1978 release Hallowe'en

Curtis would feature in the Playboy July 1985 edition (20 questions feature).  Hell...she had the body to be a cover girl, of that there is no doubt!  She is in the same issue as her friend and associate Rob 'Spinal Tap' Reiner.

 The Celts used sacred groves, called nemeton in Gaulish, for performing rituals, based on Celtic mythology. The deity involved was usually Nemetona - a Celtic goddess. Druids oversaw such rituals. Existence of such groves have been found in Germany, Switzerland, Czech Republic and Hungary in Central Europe, in many sites of ancient Gaul in France, as well as England and Northern Ireland.

At Samhain, fires would be lit (as is the same with Beltane/May Day) and some claim that sacrificial fires may have been an aspect (ala The Wicker Man) bonfire aka bone-fire. The name "bonfire" is derived from the fact that bonfires were originally fires in which bones were burned.  The end scene plays like a ritual sacrifice to appease the gods etc...Edward Woodward, Edwood Woodwood (druidic trees) and Rowan (a druidic tree) Morrison.  Rowan Morrison is Rowan Woodward in the remake...for a hat tip and more resonance.

Like the spiritually hoodwinked and bound neophyte, Le Mat is about to enter upon the supreme adventure--that of passage through the gates of the Divine Wisdom.

The Director's Cut will show sacrifice at the film's opening...and sacrifice at the film's close, basically book-ended with sacrifice.  
 The opening sees Howie take the sacrament/communion 'the body and blood of Christ' (in a Church) which is symbolically consumed (denoting sacrifice/transubstantiation) 

and the closing will see Howie as the actual sacrificial victim (a form of Christ, a martyr etc).

Of course...it is by this very act of 'transubstantiation' (in Christian terms) that the practice of 'human sacrifice' is no longer a necessary requirement...it is Christ who is subsequently sacrificed as the replacement!

Woodward 'the fool' descends via an aircraft at the start and walks the harbour precipice...he ends on the coastal precipice.  King-like...evoking Osiris (archetypal hanged man) not forgetting his Sirius dog, the virgin, his wife Isis

The Green Man...ala Osiris the vegative/fecund god of rebirth/resurrection...
the fool dresses in green!  The fact that the Green Man is a type of pub may evoke Osiris (green man) and the 'sacramental' drinking of beer (eating of bread) in the after life.

He who can understand that the story of his higher nature is imbedded in this symbolism will receive intimations concerning a great awakening that is possible, and will know that after the sacred Mystery of Death there is a glorious Mystery of Resurrection (signifying creation/rebirth out of death)

I've recently seen a film that ties-in some of these elements from these older films...that being Kill List (2011) by Ben Wheatley.  The film seemed like The Wicker Man, Eyes Wide Shut and Rosemary's Baby rolled into one, with a bit of gritty Sean Meadows/Ken Loach flavour on top.

The Hanged (Wo)Man aspect is employed, as is the 'Arthurian' subtext...there are also heavy Christian references.

The cult's mark...shows aspects of the cross (ala the hanged man/jesus), the tripod/triangle (used to suspend the woman, see pic) and the cross/circle relating to the 'crosshairs' of a sniper's rifle...the main protagonist formerly being a sniper and now hitman.

The woman (clearly self sacrifice and regarded as an honor, which the film implies!) suspended/hanged from the tripod. She is wearing a dress made from bank notes.

In some decks the figure (The Hanged Man) carries under each arm a money bag from which coins are escaping. Popular tradition associates this card with Judas Iscariot, who is said to have gone forth and hanged himself, the money bags representing the payment he received for his crime.

The victims (priest, librarian etc) are imo ALL WILLING sacrificial victims, but for a greater cause…the cause of this specific cult, which imo is to bring about Jay as a form of new assassin/murderer/leader for THIS CULT! (hence a form of antichrist). ‘Willingly sacrificed’…we are witnessing a form of apoplexy….a type of ‘falling on your sword’ aspect with the priest. librarian etc. This is further solidified by the self-hanging scene near the end…ala the tarot ‘hanged man’…’destruction of self brings life to man’ etc. We could perhaps view the whole thing as Jay’s ‘uber hazing’ into this cult and the sacrifice (unknowingly) of his own family as a form of penance for his entry.

In the credits, the source (the big machine head that speaks to Neo) is credited as "Deus ex machina" which means "a god from a machine."

 The root of the word Wicker is wick, which in turn is a derivative of the Old English word wicca, meaning wizard, of which the feminine is wicce (literally, witch).

Christopher 'Dracula' Lee was John Carpenter and Debra Hill's first choice for Dr. Sam Loomis in HALLOWEEN. They offered the role to Lee, but he refused it. Years later, during an Avco-Embassy function for ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, Lee told Hill that he regretted not taking the role. He is also rumoured to have turned down the role of Father Malone in Carpenter's The Fog. Lee would've been a very suitable candidate with his filmic background, particularly from the Wicker Man and its subject matter...connecting straight into the Hallowe'en mythos etc.

IMO...it is likely that THX is satire and it reflects the increasingbureaucracy/mechanization of earth bound life etc...much in the way that 1984 was also a satire of its own time...that being 1948, Orwell just switched the numbers around...and most assume it is about the future blah, blah. 


The ending itself very much reminds me of the ending of the Greek film Dogtooth (see above),  from living in a dystopian controlled hell...to a form of freedom/escape and the unknown.  Basically an ability to discover freedom/escape in a seemingly hopeless scenario.  It's her exposure to certain films (mainly Rocky & Jaws) that leads to the breakdown of this family unit.

THX & The Ear

I've seen THX 1138 linked to THX 11-11 (3+8).  There are claims that it came from a phone number '849 1138' that Lucas used in his early years.  The number can be found all over various popular culture.  It is also a 'sound quality assurance system' that was popularised by Lucasfilm (1983) via Tom Holman...his initials TH and X representing cross-over.   Walter Murch who worked on THX with Lucas...would actually introduce the 5.1 surround sound system, beginning with Apocalypse Now.

This makes the current score a 1-1 draw (Vader v Luke).  In Djedi...this will all be resolved, the Abyss will be defeated by both protagonists.  The Da'ath (E)vader aka Darth Vader...will finally cross the abyss and forego the left hand path.  Vader himself becomes the 'hanged man' and he willingly sacrifices himself to save Luke (the light) and throws 'the darkness' (emperor) into the abyss.  Vader will finally be cremated on the 'planet of trees' aka Endor.

 You should've also learnt (or what I think Lucas was implying) from Empire Strikes Back, that Luke (the literal light shamen) was actually fighting HIMSELF...the internal battle of good and evil.  The reason he was defeated by 'the cave' is very simple...he took his weapons with him, when none were required.  If you bring FEAR, you'll find it.

Regarding the more recent Star Wars trilogy...episodes 1,2 & 3.  I have barely watched them, I've seen bits of them, but they really are pure unaldulterated cinematic shit...they look entirely like cartoons and are a very poor works, especially in comparison to the early trilogy.  Lucas has been literally dining out on the original series...it's no surprise to see many of the original cast return in Abram's (Ab'ram) reboot Star Wars 7.  Kathleen 'Masonic Park' Kennedy is also producing...and as is usual, it'll come out of the 'pineal' Pinewood Studios.

The red-eye flight that almost crashes is Flight 2806 which boards at Gate 42 at 12 AM. The climax of Donnie Darko occurs one week before the 1988 US presidential election, when George Bush won on November 8, 1988 [11/08/88].  Poltergeist features the '88' aspect too, in the 'tree of life' bedroom via the 'back to the future' Superbowl 1988 poster!

While in England promoting Assault on Precinct 13, Carpenter and Hill visited the site in the late afternoon one day and saw an eerie fog in the distance.

Formerly thought to originate in the Iron Age or even the neolithic period, more recent archaeological work has shown that the figure may have been cut in the Early Modern era – the 16th or 17th century AD. (the latter claim I find quite strange tbh, there is absolutely no doubt of the ancient nature of these southern regions,as it is!).  227ft = 22/7 aka PI (pi and the sun via mayday etc).

Trinny, Susannah and 100 women gave the Long Man a temporary female form by using their bodies to add pigtails, breasts and hips. ITV stated that they were given permission for the event by Sussex Archaeological Society and that they took "the utmost care... to protect this historical site".

In previous work I've mentioned Wilmington (Delaware) as connecting to Edgar Allan Poe and it also being Dino De Laurentis central etc.  Poe having a massive link to Roger Corman...who synchronistically also has quite a connection to the film The Wicker Man.  

 
Corman (the godfather of many of today's well known directors) was set to distribute the film in the US, but this was stopped after British Lion wrangles etc.  It was Corman who originally had been sent a print of the Director's Cut version...this copy would end up helping getting the film reformed into the longer cut...after aspects of the original film stock went missing in Europe etc.
The original cut being butchered by the people who bought out British Lion films.  The re-released film would gain US popularity in the late 70's after all the wranglings/sale to EMI etc.

 The sycamore specifically was regarded as a manifestation of the goddesses Nut, Isis and Hathor, who was even given the title, "Lady of the Sycamore".  In fact, this title has been interpreted to relate to a specific and particularly old tree that once stood to the south of the Temple of Ptah at Memphis during the Old Kingdom.

He must give up all that he is, even his Higher-self or Guardian angel and become a 'babe of the abyss'.
If he has not attained to the correct level he will be destroyed by the experience, according to Crowley's explanation. If he does successfully cross the abyss he will then find himself at the highest level of awareness, something akin to enlightenment in Eastern systems. If the Adept chooses not to undertake this level of his development, he becomes a 'brother of the left-hand path' (a black magickian).

Interestingly, Hawk (Twin Peaks) discovers the body of Twin Peaks''Hanged Man' aka Harold Smith.

Hidden away within the rocks of these deserts are a people known as the Fremen, who have long held a prophecy, that a man would come, a messiah, who would lead them to true freedom.

The Sand (Dune) and dreams

The Sandman is a mythical character in central and northern European folklore who brings good dreams by sprinkling magical sand onto the eyes of children while they sleep at night.  He is said to sprinkle sand or dust on or into the eyes of the child at night to bring on dreams and sleep. The grit or "sleep" in one's eyes upon waking is supposed to be the result of the Sandman's work the previous evening.  Hans Christian Andersen's 1841 folk tale Ole Lukøje introduced the Sandman, named Ole Lukøje, by relating dreams he gave to a young boy in a week through his magical technique of sprinkling dust in the eyes of the children. "Ole" is a Danish name and "Lukøje" means "close eye".

(No lie...I used to have a problem with this when I was very young, my eyes would regularly be stuck closed together by sleeping dust...I couldn't physically open them and I'd use a solution to dissolve some of it etc.)

 Hence this closing imagery and 'eyes'...then into Mr Sandman!

These names all come from the Old Irishsamain, samuin or samfuin all referring to 1 November (latha na samna: 'samhain day'), and the festival and royal assembly held on that date in medieval Ireland (oenaig na samna: 'samhain assembly'). Its meaning is glossed as 'summer's end', and the frequent spelling with f suggests analysis by popular etymology as sam ('summer') and fuin ('end'). The Old Irish sam is from Proto-Indo-European (PIE) *semo-; cognates include Welshhaf, Bretonhañv, English summer and Old Norsesumar, all meaning 'summer', and the Sanskritsáma ('season')

Season of the Wicce/Wicca
With all the above in mind...it made perfect sense to cast Dan O'Herlihy as the Irish warlock in Hallowe'en 3 : Season of the Witch.  Celtic mythology blatantly getting a heavy airing etc. Aspects of the stones from Stonehenge, are central to the plot and masks. Dick Warlock also features in H3, you might recall that (Dick) Warlock played Michael Myers in Hallowe'en 2.  He was Kurt Russell's stunt double for 25 years and is the father of Baywatch/Society actor Billy.


 Warlock was also briefly shown (in silhouette) in Carpenter's The Thing.  It is likely that he is supposed to be Palmer, Warlock's silhouette was probably used to maintain ambiguity etc.


 Rob Bottin did the make-up effects for Carpenter's The Thing (with help from Stan Winston etc).
 Bottin would also feature as 'the pirate' (Blake) in Carpenter's The Fog.  Bottin just has to be one of the greatest 'special fx' masters of all time...his work on The Thing still holds up incredibly well, especially when we consider that it was only 1982! Even when you compare this work with the current CGI phenomena...it still kicks CGI's ass into touch!

 He memorbaly takes the solid gold cross from the priest at The Fog's close...perhaps a veiled reference to The Fool (and his gold), I only mention this because Rob was born on All Fool's Day aka April 1st!
Perhaps Malone as the imminent hanged man...could also be considered.

 A protege of Rick Baker, Bottin would create the 'were-wolf' effects for the film The Howling.

Bottin also worked on Roger 'Poe' Corman films...like Humanoids From The Deep.



The wolf is usually associated with the principle of evil, because of the mournful discordance of its howl and the viciousness of its nature. In Scandinavian mythology the Fenris Wolf was one of the sons of Loki (the shape-shifter), the infernal god of the fires. 

Backdraft Bull Russell and the firey end...

With the temple of Asgard in flames about them, the gods under the command of Odin fought their last great battle against the chaotic forces of evil.   With frothing jowls the Fenris Wolf devoured Odin, the Father of the Gods, and thus destroyed the Odinic universe. Here the Fenris Wolf represents those mindless powers of Nature that overthrew the primitive creation.

The four figures in the corners of the card are also referenced in the Book of Revelation, 4:7, where the throne of God is described: "And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle."  Later decks avoid such overt Hebrew symbolism, or ignore it altogether, choosing to explain these observers as representatives of the natural world, or the kingdom of beasts.

The lady in the center is thus a symbol of the goal of mystical seekers. In some older decks, this central figure is Christ, in others it is Hermes. Whenever it comes up, this card represents what is truly desired.

 Blair played 'the hanged man' and Christ is also an example of 'the hanged man'...as previously discussed.
